Some of the key components that Enigma is offering:

a platform to enable developers to build ’privacy by design’

Enigma’s contracts engine uses Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs – executing all contract code) which can hide data and is compliant with Ethereum (some exceptions e.g. define logic in contract…). In addition, Enigma plans to release even stronger privacy protocols for dApps in 2019 that will allow using various execution environments, either TEEs or Multi-Party Computations via a Distributed VM. Enigma also plans on migrating away from the Ethereum blockchain so all dApps run on the Enigma blockchain to improve – dramatically – the scalability of the blockchain.

This is another interesting project for the blockchain stack and should provide for some great use cases (e.g., data marketplace, secure backend, internal compartmentalization, N-factor authentication, Identity, Internet of Things, Distributed Personal Data Stores, crypto-banks, blind e-voting, wallets…). Go check out Enigma and, if you are a developer, sign-up for the private test-net and start using and developing for it. We will try and provide updates to Enigma.

Blockstack Browser Menu – Home|IDs|Wallet| Settings

Ok, you have installed the Blockstack browser and it is running properly (reach out to us if you need help or go here). Now, let’s do a quick look inside the browser, in particular the Menu Bar (image below is from the Blockstack Browser running on our personal computer). Now, lets parse through the home page and some of the features of the Blockstack Browser. The image below and the featured image for this page is the Menu Bar as it is found on the latest version (0.22.1) of the Blockstack’s Browser home page.

As you see, the browser is loaded on your personal computer and it opens under Localhost:8888 (see image above – address line of the browser – localhost:8888) on your computer. This is a key aspect of the Blockstack Browser on the blockstack ecosystem. In other words, the users control their data and apps run on their devices (user computer and not on some other server). There are no centralized servers, no middlemen, no multiple passwords, no massive data silos to breach, and no services tracking us around the internet. And, the Browser is also where users can go to discover and use apps using Blockstack – the applications used on blockstack’s browser are server-less and decentralized (you control use, i.d., storage, interaction…).

“Blockstack Academy, is a series of educational videos featuring members of the Blockstack community and core contributors. It includes helpful answers to questions about Blockstack, the history of the internet, distributed systems principles and pitfalls, and a vision for what can be built using systems like Blockstack.”

At this writing, it appears that there are over 50+ Blockstack Academy videos available on such subjects ranging from identity ownership and decentralization to developer related subjects such as encoded sub-domain entries to multi-player storage, and many others. And, the videos are presented by not only the founders of Blockstack – Muneeb Ali and Ryan Shea, but some of the developers, software engineers and many others. These educational videos are another great resource on all things blockstack (including dApp, dApps, decentralized application, decentralized applications and Web 3.0).

Welcome to the Stack CafeTM — We recently read about a new tool for developers (a developer Alpha launch) that was presented today on Blockstack re: Multi-Player Storage. The team at Blockstack believes that multi-player storage is the next logical step in the evolution of the Blockstack ecosystem. The first two seminal steps involved:

Blockstack Auth, which provided you with a single-sign on you could use with apps to privately access them without any 3rd parties involved

Single-Player Storage, which gave you the ability to store all of your app data privately.(e.g., managing your own private token portfolio app).

Multi-Player Storage will provide the Blockstack Browser user the ability to not only own and control access to the user’s own data, but will also give the user the ability to share the user’s data with the user’s friends without the need for a third party. Remember, it is the user’s (your) data, and the user (you) and only the user (you) should determine the fate of the data created by the user (you).

Blockstack has provided some helpful items for the developer community as shown below:

Multi-Player Storage Tutorial

And, once you have been through the tutorial and feel emboldened to create on the Blockstack ecosystem, Blockstack encourages all developers to go and check the latest bounty being offered for decentralized application (s) (dApp, dApps, Web 3.0) in the communications space – Community Messaging App and a P2P Encrypted Messaging App (See also – $50K).

Over the last quarter or so of 2017, Blockstack announced the Blockstack Signature Fund — a $25 million dollar fund of used to help support teams to build applications for the new internet. Blockstack likens the Signature Bounties to contests where teams submit products and judges determine who wins the prize for the best product. Blockstack further explains bounties as follows:

“Bounties are a useful tool for building out important apps on the new internet because they leverage a global community of developers, designers, and other talented folks to work on bringing interesting ideas into reality. Since apps built using Blockstack don’t own their user’s data or identity, they can be expanded on or re-purposed by other teams as the basis for more complex apps that build out an ecosystem.”

UPDATE – 1.30.2018: Just off the Grid[dle]TM– We heard that the developer of the multi-player storage dApp Graphite will be joining the Blockstack team in Berlin to exhibit the Graphite dApp during the show. Great news for Graphite and Blockstack.

Graphite firmly believes that when you create something, the creator:

should own it

should be able to store it where the creator wants

should be able to access it when the creator wants to

does not store your data (this is done on the storage platform the user selected via blockstack browser)

As shown below, we have created a couple of test documents and saved them only for our use (unless you want to give someone else access in order to share or collaborate – see multi-reader below and *Caveat). For example, we created and saved a couple of encrypted files (e.g., GRT and Test of Graphite) to one of our chosen storage platforms (e.g., in this case we are using the default storage provided by Blockstack). As shown below, the “Your Documents” page appears as follows with the above mentioned file(s).

Welcome to The Stack CafeTM — Let’s take a quick look at Blockstack. As discussed in a prior thread, Blockstack wants to provide the new decentralized internet. And, a decentralized internet, means? Well, let’s look at what Blockstack believes it means –

“A decentralized internet is one where users don’t need to trust any intermediaries or remote services. We envision a world where users control their own data, and power flows back to the users. Reducing the friction to deploying new Blockstack nodes is an important step towards that mission.”

In the present day centralized internet, web applications (or owners of the web applications) most likely own all of the user’s data from the use of the web application, control where the user’s data is stored and control the access to the user’s data. It appears that the user of web applications do not have much if any control. This is where Blockstack and its vision of a decentralized internet comes into view. Blockstack wants to help bring to fruition:

A decentralized internet free of:

middlemen

passwords (e.g., multiple passwords), and

massive centralized data repositories that are susceptible to being breached.

A decentralized internet where the users:

control their data;

own their data, not the application provider

control where their data is stored

control who can access their data

applications (apps) run on the user’s device (not on the server of a third party);

do not have services tracking them around the internet.

A decentralized internet where developers:

use java-script to build a single-page application;

do not plug into the front-end of a centralized API;

but can plug into an API run by the user;

don’t have to worry about:

running servers;

maintaining databases; or

the applications are server-less and decentralized.

users bring their own storage

use public-key cryptography for authentication

The grid above shows the inter-connected nodes or computers connecting to each other to form the decentralized internet network/grid to send/receive information or data in the early 1970’s. The images below show how computers talk to one another (via the layer or protocol stack and packets). (See – “How The Internet Works?” – published on Stanford University’s website.)

Today, the modern internet (some 20+ years old from the introduction of “www”) is far more complex in its size and implementation. Presently, some parts of the internet are decentralized (hardware, IP and TCP) while the application layer (stack) – in particular, has become more and more centralized (e.g., more data controlled by fewer and fewer companies – think social media, search, devices, online commerce, walled-gardens…). The current system with all of the good things is not completely fulfilling its original vision – full decentralization (i.e., we should own our data…). And, apparently, some other people and companies believe the same thing.

One company in particular – BlockStack, and the people involved with Blockstack – its team, its investors, its open source community of developers, its users and its open support community – appear to believe in a fully decentralized internet (read the Blockstack documents e.g., white paper…).

Basically, it appears that Blockstack wants to re-decentralize the internet, in particular – the application layer (stack) of the internet (e.g., see – Blockstack and its documents e.g., white paper…). Blockstack’s team and others, are working tirelessly to bring us new tools, infrastructure and applications – with a tie-in to the distributed ledger or blockchain. And with these new tools, Blockstack enables the user to own his/her/its data and maintain and protect his/her/its privacy and security (e.g., encrypted decentralized storage, authentication & identity). How is Blockstack doing this? Well, not to go to far into the stack, Blockstack is developing key tools and infrastructure so that software developers and programmers (coders) can build single-page applications (dApps – (e.g., in javascript) in which the user controls not only his/her identity & authentication (e.g., think encrypted identification) but is also in control where and how his/her information (data) is stored on the decentralized internet.

So one might envision – one universal form of encrypted identification that is unique to the user that allows the user to securely participate in a decentralized internet and control his/her data that is generated from using the decentralized internet (e.g., imagine an internet with no middlemen, no passwords, and no massive centralized data repositories to breach).

Just imagine, if you have control (e.g., identity, data, storage and it is secure) and not the centralized companies, the possibilities appear to go on and on… And, just like the early days of the network/internet (see above image from 1973), Blockstack is at the early stage of building the re-decentralized internet.
