Welcome to the Stack Cafe^TM— Blockstack Miami is hosting its first Meetup. Previously we discussed a new Blockstack group – Blockstack Miami.

Well, Blockstack Miami is making things happen in Miami, Florida and is already hosting its first Meetup at 6:30 pm. on April 12, 2018.

Blockstack Berlin: dApp Developer Presentations – Graphite’s Justin Hunter

Blockstack Berlin: A Signature Fund Event – With little over a month to go, Blockstack Berlin (March 2, 2018) is gathering momentum and is shaping up to be an event you (developers, tech advocates, enterprise partners, global customers, hackers (hackathon), …) do not want to miss.

Along with all of the scheduled speakers, Blockstack Berlin has also invited some dApp developers to debut/demonstrate their new and exciting decentralized application(s) at the Blockstack Berlin event. The dApps to be presented at the Blockstack Berlin event have either been built or are being built for use on the Blockstack ecosystem. We have attached – for your convenience – a list of dApp developers scheduled to present at Blockstack Berlin.

This is the beginning of our series of profiles on the dApps to be presented at Blockstack Berlin. Our first dApp profile is on Graphite.

The purpose of Graphite is to allow the user of the application on the blockstack internet architecture to create, store and share any document or sheet in a secure and decentralized way.

Graphite firmly believes that when you create something, the creator:

should own it
should be able to store it where the creator wants
should be able to access it when the creator wants to
should be able to use it how the creator wants to use it
should be able to share it (control access).

And, when you use Graphite in connection with the Blockstack browser (which provides the platform for encrypting (saving) and decrypting the data (loading it)), neither Graphite (nor Blockstack):

has access to your information (data is encrypted only for the user to see or share…)
store your data (this is done on the storage platform the user selected via blockstack browser and is secure/encrytped)

Blockstack: Event in Berlin – March 2, 2018

Blockstack announces a new event to take place in Berlin in March of 2018. Blockstack Berlin: A Signature Fund event at Axica. Blockstack Berlin is bringing together top experts on data privacy, blockchain, information theory, and the decentralized community at large to imagine, learn about, and create decentralized applications. Some keynote speakers include Edward Snowden and Nick Szabo.Check out the Blockstack Berlin video here as well as past Blockstack event videos here.

1.30.2018 – UPDATE: The Stack Cafe just heard that the developer of the multi-player storage dApp Graphite will be joining the Blockstack team in Berlin to exhibit the Graphite dApp during the show. Great news for Graphite and Blockstack.

Blockstack: A Quick Look …

Welcome to The Stack Cafe^TM — Let’s take a quick look at Blockstack. As discussed in a prior thread, Blockstack wants to provide the new decentralized internet. And, a decentralized internet, means? Well, let’s look at what Blockstack believes it means –

“A decentralized internet is one where users don’t need to trust any intermediaries or remote services. We envision a world where users control their own data, and power flows back to the users. Reducing the friction to deploying new Blockstack nodes is an important step towards that mission.”

In the present day centralized internet, web applications (or owners of the web applications) most likely own all of the user’s data from the use of the web application, control where the user’s data is stored and control the access to the user’s data. It appears that the user of web applications do not have much if any control. This is where Blockstack and its vision of a decentralized internet comes into view. Blockstack wants to help bring to fruition:

A decentralized internet free of:

middlemen
passwords (e.g., multiple passwords), and
massive centralized data repositories that are susceptible to being breached.

A decentralized internet where the users:

control their data;
- own their data, not the application provider
- control where their data is stored
- control who can access their data
applications (apps) run on the user’s device (not on the server of a third party);
do not have services tracking them around the internet.

A decentralized internet where developers:

use java-script to build a single-page application;
do not plug into the front-end of a centralized API;
- but can plug into an API run by the user;
have a complete the step-by-step tutorial and libraries
- e.g., blockstack.js;
don’t have to worry about:
- running servers;
- maintaining databases; or
- building out user management systems; and
  - the applications are server-less and decentralized.
  - users bring their own storage
  - use public-key cryptography for authentication
  - applications don’t have to store anything

A decentralized internet where Blockstack:

includes a decentralized domain name system (DNS),
includes a includes a decentralized public key distribution system,
includes a registry for apps and user identities and
includes a blockstack browser that allows the user to access the decentralized applications (dApps) that are used to access the blockstack decentralized internet
tokens for use in the ecosystem (see Blockstack)

With all of the above, Blockstack is forging ahead with the new internet for decentralized apps (dApps)(Web 3.0). From the users perspective, Blockstack gives the user identity freedom and data autonomy. From the developer’s perspective, things look simpler to build, easier to implement with reduced overhead in maintaining the application.
