The Stacks 2.0 Testnet is Live

It appears that Blockstack has launched the Stacks testnet today – To get started right away, visit blockstack.org/testnet.   Go try it out and get ready for the launch of the mainnet later this Summer.

Go to the testnet and try out running a node, mining (coming soon), creating smart contracts, testing…

Welcome to The Stack Cafe^TM — A Giant Leap for Blockstack – Testnet for Stacks^2.0, a new mining protocol.

Blockstack is about to introduce a new mining mechanism – Stacks^2.0 or proof-of-transfer (PoX).  In this new protocol, a new secure blockchain is established in which the miner transfers the cryptocurrrency to another participant on the blockchain instead of burning the cryptocurrency.  This new Pox protocol helps incentivize – earn rewards – network participants to actively participate in the network but also may help eliminate the bootstrapping problems for new blockchains and make the new blockchain protocol more stable and secure.

The Stacks Genesis Block release was designed to smooth the path and further facilitate the building of decentralized applications (dApps) by developers.  In addition, the latest iteration also enabled the distribution of Stacks tokens to pre-existing purchasers and the registration of smart contracts and Stacks tokens.  For more on the latest software release, please visit the Blockstack forum page.

And, to go along with the latest release, Blockstack performed a Stacks token transfer a couple of days ago.  The Blockstack Stacks token network is now live.

As we mentioned in an earlier post here, the Blockstack Community Rewards Program is a way to reward community members for the value they bring to the ecosystem.

It looks like the ways to contribute has grown and the list of contributors and rewards has grown too.  Let’s take a look at what is new to the world of Blockstack contributions and stacks rewards.

For example, it appears that Blockstack PBC has upped the ante and is offering a $1,000,000 in grants of $100,000 each to ten teams to create a new Social Network.  Blockstack PBC puts it this way:

“No single entity should have unilateral say over how 2 billion people connect and communicate. The current centralized model of social networking has created a stranglehold on our collective consciousness, communication, and friend network. But we’re at an inflection point — a moment where people can reclaim control of the way they network.”

Blockstack PBC will even award stacks to the person that pushes out a tweet or post about the same initiative – Request for a Social Network” –

“Sometimes the best founders can be hidden, that’s why we want your help in getting the message out to extraordinary founders looking to build decentralized social networks using Blockstack.  Click ahead to learn more!”

The initiative promoted by Blockstack PBC for the $1,000,000 grants for a new social network can be found here.

So, if you are up to the task or have the team up to the task, follow the links above and build the social network for the decentralized internet on Blockstack.

Some of the other tasks that one might be able to contribute to include feedback on tutorials, writing a blog post, signing up for Blockstack, unit testing, de-lint(ing), and many others.

The post Blockstack: Stacks – The Token for use on the Blockstack Ecosystem has gone “live” with a testnet appeared first on The Stack Cafe™.

We just heard about the new Blockstack Community reward program introduced on Blockstack earlier today. As described by Blockstack’s Patrick Stanley, the Blockstack Community Rewards Program is a way to reward community members for the value they bring to the ecosystem.

In essence, if you can contribute to the Blockstack ecosystem in a technical or non-technical way, Blockstack will issue to said contributor the native Blockstack token, a Stack.

For example, one may contribute by creating a tutorial that showcases some of blockstack’s developer tools, use the decentralized apps and help the developers improve the app (feedback on features or glitches), and perhaps feature a member of the Blockstack ecosystem at an event or conference or write a blog post about Blockstack.  Below is a screenshot about the new rewards program.
