This type of internet usage is growing and bodes well for the application developers in the mobile and decentralized application space. For example, Blockstack, Ethereum, EOS and many other platforms are being built to provide an ecosystem for not only regular internet use but for use on mobile devices. Blockstack recently released a platform to help developers build applications for use on mobile devices. See Blockstack iOS SDK.

Welcome to the Stack CafeTM — Blockstack Website: Updated to Focus on the Developer. The website for Blockstack has been updated to realign the mission of Blockstack to more accurately reflect its focus – to help the developer community or technical audience build decentralized applications (dapp(s)).

Straight from Blockstack: “We want to enable developers to build high-quality decentralized apps and learn about our tools for decentralized auth and decentralized storage. … Blockstack is a developer-centric community and platform; we believe the new website better represents the mission of the project.”

Some of the featured changes include:

Easy to find tutorials for how to get started

Short feature comparison between Firebase and Blockstack

Links to various technical details and components of the Blockstack network

Information for developers to get funding

Featured apps built on Blockstack

A new website with a clear focus. Blockstack is trying to position the ecosystem for the upcoming Stacks token and blockchain deployment. But, in order to enable the app economy Blockstack envisions, it needs to provide the technical and developer community the most support and tools necessary to make the Blockstack vision come to fruition. Well, the re-focused website is a start in what it believes to be in the right direction.

Some additional screenshots for the new Blockstack website are shown below.

We will try and do a quick overview of open collective for you.

With open collective, the developers put forth an open source platform to help open source projects that have created open collectives to raise money and share their expenses in a transparent way.

open collective further describes itself in these words:

“OpenCollective enables groups to quickly set up a collective, raise funds and manage them transparently.

We want all those seeds to have a chance to grow, to bring their ideas to life. We believe everyone should have the tools to create the organizations of tomorrow. And we are dedicating ourselves to making that happen!”

Sounds great, and it is open source and transparent.

And, it appears to help solve the problem of raising resources to fund new ideas whether the group is small or large. This type of project may blend in well with other open source projects e.g. blockstack.(or dApps on top of blockstack e.g. Souq)

A rundown – on how open collective works – from one of the developers can be found at this link here and here.

We have not tried out open collective but will give it a go at some point (when we do we will try and provide a brief overview). But, it looks like a great tool to help with the transparent crowdfunding space. In the meantime, go give it a try and give us and/or open collective some feedback.

In addition, open collective is open source. We like that and try to promote open source. See our post on open source here.

And, perhaps it may be a tool that can be used on the Blockstack ecosystem (e.g. a decentralized voluntary association crowdfunding – or perhaps it may be a good chance for collaboration with another dApp that does the same type of thing for voluntary associations and crowdfunding – cryptocracy/souq).

If you have not tried out Blockstack, you can find some links below to help you get started in the decentralized internet platform for identity, security and storage. Gotta have the Blockstack browser –

Note: If you do not have the Blockstack browser, please see this link (note – to enable the full functionality of any dApp built for the Blockstack ecosystem (e.g., decentralized, building a new internet, a decentralized internet, re-decentralizing the internet) you need to use the Blockstack browser).

Remember, per Blockstack – all information or data you create or store using a dApp via your Blockstack Browser is encrypted and securely stored in a decentralized manner. And, it is only accessible by you and only those you give access to your data and information.

Welcome to The Stack CafeTM — LessPass – a Stateless Password Manager. LessPass is an open source project to use/generate passwords. And, it looks like a neat open source password project worth checking out. We will try and do a quick overview of LessPass for you.

With LessPass, the developers put forth an open source password manager that allows for remembering “one master password to access your passwords, anywhere, anytime.”

LessPass further describes itself in these words:

LessPass generates unique passwords for websites, email accounts, or anything else based on a master password and information you know.

LessPass is different from other password managers that you can find on the Internet because:

It does not save your passwords in a database

It does not need to sync your devices

It is open source (source code can be audited).”

Sounds great, and it is stateless. Stateless – via a general definition – “In computing, a stateless protocol is a communications protocol in which no information is retained by either sender or receiver, meaning that they are agnostic of the state of one another. ” (See this link here)

And, it appears to help solve the problem of having to remember multiple passwords, breaches, syncing and the code is perhaps more robust based on the audit-ability of the same (open source). This type of project may blend in well with other open source projects e.g. blockstack.

A rundown – on how it works – from one of the developers can be found at this link here.

We have not tried out LessPass but will give it a go at some point (when we do we will try and provide a brief overview). But, it looks like a great tool to help with the password conundrum. In the meantime, go give it a try and give us and/or LessPass some feedback.

In addition, LessPass is not trying to take advantage of anyone. LessPass prides itself on

being open source open source (GPLv3 license)

We like that and try to promote open source and no tracking etc. See our posts on open source, licenses and online protection here, here and here.

And, perhaps it may be a tool that can be used on the Blockstack ecosystem (e.g. a decentralized password manager). If you have not tried out Blockstack, you can find some links below to help you get started in the decentralized internet platform for identity, security and storage. Gotta have the Blockstack browser –

As mentioned previously, one aspect of promoting the Blockstack ecosystem is to provide a platform to help support the global community of developers, designers, and others to submit their ideas and products for a chance to win a prize. Over the last quarter or so and into 2017, Blockstack’s Signature Fund has held several bounties – see these links, here, and here (winner of portfolio app).

Well, once again, the Blockstack Signature Fund — a $25 million dollar fund used to help support teams to build applications for the new internet has yet again announced another bounty for a dApp. And, once again, Blockstack has partnered with a another project – ShapeShift – to bring the open source world a new wallet platform – Universal Wallet.

Welcome to The Stack CafeTM – Blockstack Developers: Using Open Source projects to Bootstrap dApps – Further to the update of the Blockstack browser with a couple of new dApps, we wanted to bring additional attention to the use of open source projects in dApps built for the Blockstack ecosystem.

Generally, and directly from the Open Source site – “open source software is software that can be freely accessed, used, changed, and shared (in modified or unmodified form) by anyone. Open source software is made by many people, and distributed under licenses that comply with the Open Source Definition.”

Recently, a new decentralized communication application was launched on the Blockstack browser home page. The new dApp is called Stealthy and it uses open source software to build its application. Additional information on stealthy can be found here.

Like Blockstack, there are many software programs that are open source. A couple of great resources for finding open source software and programs might be Github, NPM and React.

Github

GitHub is a development platform inspired by the way you work. From open source to business, you can host and review code, manage projects, and build software alongside millions of other developers.

NPM

NPM opens up an entire world of JavaScript talent for you and your team. It’s the world’s largest software registry, with approximately 3 billion downloads per week. The registry contains over 600,000 packages (building blocks of code). Open-source developers from every continent use npm to share and borrow packages, and many organizations use npm to manage private development as well.

React

React is a declarative, efficient, and flexible JavaScript library for building user interfaces from facebook open source with an MIT license.

A general premise is that open source is used to share freely with others. And, when you share something, it perhaps – makes it easier for others to learn and/or building something e.g. bootstrap the learning curve or building curve. In addition, open source provides transparency and promotion of the same. One should not reinvent or need to reinvent the wheel, so to speak. In other words, a developer can develop from scratch or bootstrap with software developed by someone else.

Now, in connection with above, we recently learned that stealthy made substantial use of an open source project to bootstrap its application to a user-ready level. And, remember, Blockstack is open source and provides a foundational infrastructure for all dApps that are built for use on its internet network.

The particular program stealthy used to complete its dApp – along with Blockstack’s libraries – was from a developer and computer scientist named Feross Aboukhadijeh. The program Mr. Aboukhadijeh wrote is called 📡 Simple WebRTC video/voice and data channels. And, like stealthy, Mr. Aboukhadijeh used an open source project called WebRTC.

WebRTC – is a free, open project that provides browsers and mobile applications with Real-Time Communications (RTC) capabilities via simple APIs. The WebRTC components have been optimized to best serve this purpose.

An open source (WebRTC), being used in an open source (Simple WebRTC), being used in an open source (Blockstack), being used to bring stealthy to fruition. Now, is stealthy open source? Not sure but assume that it is or will be. Hopefully, stealthy will disclose that and declare its license chose very soon. Please stayed tuned for more on that here.

But, the stealthy project shows sharing of open source to the nth degree – the bottom line for open source.

And, along with being open source, the open source project can use a license e.g. MIT license to help outline the parameters or criteria for its use. In connection with the above, the following licenses are attached to the following projects:

📡 Simple WebRTC – uses an MIT license

Welcome to the Stack CafeTM — Blockstack: Developers Corner: It is has been developed… Do I need a License? –

Okay, you have worked hard, put in long hours and it is done – the best dApp the planet has ever seen, open source of course. You have put it up on Github and now you are wondering what would be the best license to use for your open source project dApp (or anything open source).

Well, we ran across this useful site full of information about the entire spectrum of open source licensing alternatives, thanks to Github. The site is called – Choose A License.

Welcome to the Developer’s corner (not only for developers though)… Open Source License overview. In this post, we hope to give you a brief overview about the myriad of licenses available to developers once they have finished an application build and want to choose an appropriate open source license.

MIT license – A short and simple permissive license with conditions only requiring preservation of copyright and license notices.
The Choose A License site further explains that the licenses (on the Choose A License site) represent the entire spectrum of open source licenses, from highly protective to unconditional. One of these should work for most new open source projects. Many other open source licenses exist, including older versions of and close substitutes for some of the above. See the resources listed on Choose A License about page if you’d like to read more.

So, if you have built an application that is open source and you need a license to go along with it, try the Choose A License website – found here. We hope this post has been helpful.

Welcome to the Stack CafeTM — In order for the Blockstack ecosystem to work, someone has to build something. Well, Blockstack is and has been hard at work building out the architecture and infrastructure for the entire ecosystem. Another step or evolution in the build-out of the Blockstack ecosystem is to have applications to use/run on the ecosystem.

And, in order to have applications to use/run on the ecosystem, you need an idea for a decentralized application (e.g., P2P Encrypted Messaging, Community Messaging, Word Processing, Cryptocurrency Portfolios…) and then a developer to build the decentralized application. Welcome to the Developer’s corner (not only for developers though)…

In this post, and subsequent posts related to this series, we will try and explore some of the tools created for developers (and others) to build the decentralized applications (dApps) that can be used on the decentralized internet.

To begin with, Blockstack is probably a developer’s dream come true. By that, we mean Blockstack is making it a lot easier for developers to build decentralized applications for use on the Blockstack ecosystem.

How did Blockstack make it a little easier, well they setup the kitchen (architecture and infrastructure) with almost everything the cook (developer) needs to create the dish (decentralized application – dApp). The kitchen – Blockstack’s ecosystem, includes (among many other items):

a decentralized domain name system (DNS)(it is called BNS)

a decentralized public key distribution system

a registry for applications (dApps)

a registry for user identities

a decentralized storage system

tokens…

so the cook (developer) can bake (build) some wonderful creations (dApps). Below, you will find a couple of different diagrams (e.g., stack for decentralized applications & how blockstack works) laying out the major components – blockchain, virtualchain, routing layer and storage layer – of the Blockstack architecture:

It is all there – the Blockstack infrastructure described above, provides a lot of the tools that a developer might need to build decentralized applications for use on the Blockstack ecosystem. And, by providing some of the tools needed to build decentralized applications, Blockstack has enabled the developer to more easily build a dApp. For example, the

developer can use java-script (and libraries) to build a single page application(s)

that does not plug into the front-end of a centralized API

but one that plugs into an API run by the user (as the API is pre-built and runs on the user’s device)

developer does not have to worry about

running servers

maintaining databases

building out user management systems because:

the applications are server-less and decentralized

users bring their own storage

user/applications use public-key cryptography for authentication

the developer’s of the application and the application itself do not have to store anything

To make it even easier, Blockstack also includes libraries and step-by-step tutorials (e.g., identity, storage, tokens (coming soon)) for the developer, hacker, hobbyist and others to build decentralized applications.

All of this looks so good that we might try and build a decentralized application too. All kidding aside (not really though), it looks like Blockstack has put forth a complete package so developing decentralized applications should be a lot easier. In addition, Blockstack has put together a great team in case a question should arise. And, to top it off, everything Blockstack ecosystem is an open source community project. So, not only is Blockstack there to help, the open source community of developers, hackers, users and supporters, and others – already participating in the environment – are helping out too (e.g. forums, meet-ups, code/programing feedback, testing…).

Please find below, some links that might be most helpful as you learn more about Blockstack’s tools for developing a decentralized application for use on Blockstack.
